Athletes Foot

Athlete’s Foot is caused by a fungal infection on the bottom of the foot and /or in between the toes. It appears scaly and flaky, the skin becomes cracked, red, itchy and painful. This is one of the most common skin infections of the feet. In Diabetics, Athlete’s Feet can become deadly. It is caused by the fungus family Trichophyton. It can be spread to other people. The most common area where people come into contact with this fungus is in showers and locker rooms where people often walk barefoot.

If left untreated the skin can crack, exposing raw skin and a secondary bacterial infection can set in and spread up the leg causing a serious cellulitis. If you have itchy, cracked skin on your feet call Dr. Rhodes at our office located in the Fort Lauderdale area.
