Gout

You may be asking yourself what exactly is Gout? Have you ever been awakened in the middle of the night by pain in your big toe, ankle or heel? Did it feel “hot”? Did it appear swollen and red (inflamed)? If Gout is not treated, it can lead to painful foot/ bone deformities and sometimes even kidney involvement. If Gout is treated early, the pain can be relieved and you can help prevent any additional problems. With the proper diet and the right medication Gout is usually treatable. However, in severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.

You may be wondering what is the cause of Gout? When there is an excess of uric acid (which is type of waste product produced by our bodies) the uric acid forms crystals. These crystals often accumulate in the affected joint, bringing on a gouty attack! If you just “suffer through the pain” and do not address the problem and have multiple Gouty attacks, these crystals can form large deposits called Tophi. The Tophi may damage your joint and eventually cause deformities.
